Where Do You Find Your Identity?

Each of us has an undeniable need to feel secure about who we are in the world. No wonder identity has become such an important but contentious issue in our culture today.

And understandably so. Answering the questions "Who am I?" is arguably the most important need that we have. Failing to answer that question, or answer it adequately, leaves us feeling unsettled and unmoored in the world.

But where should we begin looking for the answer?

Over the past 150 years, Western culture has undergone a dramatic change in where people begin looking for the answer to our identity. Historically we looked to things outside of us, such as our family, nation, or religious tradtions.

More recently, however, the voices of culture and our view of the world has shifted our focus inward. We have come to see identity more as a function of our own internal experiences and sense of self. But is looking inward a reliable place to begin when trying to figure out who we are?
